A traveller comes to a fork in the road which leads to two villages. In one village the people always tell lies, and in the other village the people always tell the truth. The traveller needs to conduct business in the village where everyone tells the truth. A man from one of the villages is standing in the middle of the fork, but there is no indication of which village he is from. The traveller approaches the man and asks him one question. From the villager's answer, he knows which road to follow. What did the traveller ask?

Best answer

Okay, he'll say  "which road goes to your village?". He would then take the route the person pointed to. The truthful peson, would point to  his village, the truth village, right? Also, the liar would point to the truth village, the same village because he can't tell the truth. So, if the traveller wants to go the truth village, he knows which road to take. Then, if he wants to take the lie village, he would take that. But, why would anyone want to go there? wink Next, he should make signs saying "Truth Village" and "Lie Village: Don't go here!"

Anyway, do you get it?

Hopefully this helps!!!!!

The answer is you ask one person what the other would say. For example, let's say that the answer is right. If you ask the liar, he would tell you the opposite of the truth because he would lie. If you ask the truth teller, he would say the other person would tell you to get left, because that's what the liar would tell you. So no matter who you ask, whatever they say goes the opposite way.

Yalu could say either A. What everyone else was saying, which village are you from or B: what are you wearing, are you wearing a hat, other things that you can see. Like if I ask “are you wearing a hat” and I can clearly see if he is wearing one.

The traveler asked: "OK, of the two possibilities, A: "You are a LIAR", and B. "The road on the LEFT goes to Truth-town" - is ONE and ONLY ONE of those possibilities CORRECT?

An answer of "YES": The road on the LEFT would lead to Truth-town.

An answer of "NO": The road on the RIGHT would lead to Truth-town.

This is the only real correct answer here. Because the real difficulty the puzzle presents is not discovering which road is correct, but ascertaining to which tribe the man at the fork belongs to. The best route taken determines this - what is he? Truth-teller or liar? We have to get there first.

pianoman's question does it, and if one thing is for certain - this solution did not come easily or swiftly. You have to examine the several scenarios this brilliant question presents, and following the behavioral logistics of the puzzle - you'll see, that this is indeed a question that will arrive at the only simple, absolute, and genuine truth you need, any way you look at it: "YES" or "NO".
