Andiswa Gebashe is a sign language interpreter for the president of South Africa and works to translate comedy acts.[1][2]
Early Life
Gebashe grew up in Soweto in the 1990s.[1] Her father was deaf.[1] Her first language was South African Sign Language (SASL).[1] Gebashe’s father is one of the few deaf stand-up comedians who also translates music and theater.[1]
Career
Interpretation
Gebashe is a sign language interpreter for the president of South Africa.[1][2] Gebashe specifically reports on the coronavirus pandemic.[1][2] She works with Nicoline Du Toit to translate for the President.[1] Gebashe works hard to translate in a way that the original speaker would speak.[1] She tries to embody whoever she is translating for.[1] Gebashe works hard to incorporate facial expressions into her work.[1][2]
Comedy
Gebashe has worked for Andy Signs Productions for over 10 years.[2] She helps translate stand-up comedy into SASL.[2] Gebashe also hosts The Deaf Comedy Show every month in Johannesburg.[2] Her father also does stand-up comedy.[1]
