Rufino Santos

Rufino Jiao Santos (August 26, 1908 – September 3, 1973) was a Filipino priest of the Roman Catholic Church. He is known as the first Filipino Cardinal.[1]

Early life

Rufino Santos was born in Guagua, Pampanga. Santos studied at San Carlos Seminary from 1921 to 1927. He also studied at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome.[2]

Priest

Santos became a priest in 1931. He was ordained at the Basilica of Saint John Lateran in Rome.[2]

Bishop

Santos became a bishop in 1947. He was made archbishop of Manila on March 25, 1953.[2]

Repairs and renovation of Manila Cathedral were completed in 1958.[2]

Cardinal

Pope John XXIII made Santos a cardinal on March 28, 1960.[3]

In 1970, Cardinal Santos was host for Pope Paul VI when he visited the Philippines.[2]
