Saule de Lila: Chapter 2 (1900, Aboard RMS Paris)
The two passengers shivered in their ragged clothes that had been distributed among the lowest class, which
was the third. Lila felt bitter resentment bloom in her small heart as she twisted around to face her mother, whose face reflected her inner feelings and emotions.
"Mother, why did they do that?!"
"We are the lowest class, dear one. W-we are like scum to them," her mother stammered, but not because of the emotion in her voice. The waves, which had been so calm before, rocked violently and tossed the large RMS to and fro, the furious waves crashing heavily on the sides of the thick boat.
"Everyone up to deck!" shrieked a wrenched voice above. "Everyone up to deck!"
Lila and her mother exchanged frightened glances and tore up the stairs, emerging five minutes later on the soggy and windswept deck of the ship. The night sky was thick with clouds- not even the silver bold full moon was visible in the grey mass.
Suddenly, a random gust of air caught up one of the smallest children, forcing him to relinquish his tight, iron clad grip on his mother's dark hand. He yelped, screamed, and was knocked off board into the angry billowing water. The mother screeched out loud.
Then, another stronger zephyr caused Lila to lose her balance. She toppled over the edge of the deck, yelling shrilly, before plunging into the icy waves below. The last thing she heard was her mother's scream of shock, as she reached vainly over the low railings to retrieve someone she might never be able to grab again.
