Anime is the TV-version of manga, Japanese comics. There are several defining traits of anime, such as large eyes and cute faces, but not all artists draw the same. In this post I will show some different anime styles and describe them. I will describe the three main mother styles that all manga styles more or less fit in.
The first major style is Shojo, which is also the name of the comics it appears in. It is directed at young girls. The defining trait of shojo are huge, emotional eyes no matter the gender. Shojo styles appear in romantic stories.
Above is shojo, but not as extreme as some.
The next type is shonen, which is action. Characters have smaller eyes but are techinally more realistic. Shonen is usually reserved for action and adventure stories, like Bleach, Naruto, and DragonBall.
This is more of a shonen style. The eyes are smaller.
The last style is simply called anime. It technically has the best of both worlds. Any genre fits this, and is the best style for beginners to learn. Here are some examples.
Hope this explained a bit of the complex world of anime to you!
