Silens I Chapter 13

Sometimes, the best way to get something is to let it go.

The day Tom left for the Netherlands was quite a sad one. I watched him go, waving and wishing him luck. I waved my wand and let a few paper dragons fly around him, and he seemed to like that. He seemed happy so I was happy.

Lucas stood with me, After a little while, we headed back to the courtyard. It was peaceful, the blossoms were falling and the air was pink.

I closed my eyes and smiled, and said, "Listen closely to the falling leaves. They're beautiful. They've always been, and they'll never stop being that. I wish I could share it with you. I'd do anything to share them with you, 'cause you've shared everything with me."

Lucas smiled, he knew what I was getting at, him being blind and all. We were silent for a minute and I opened my eyes. We stood there in silence for quite a long time, but the silence wasn't empty. It was full of something good, something I couldn't identify, but I knew I wouldn't have it any other way.

"You think Tom will enjoy himself?" Lucas asked a bit nervously.

"Oh, yeah," I whispered back. We were in class. I had chosen to go to this class to keep Lucas company for a while. I wasn't really listening to the teacher. "He loves magical creatures. Well, who doesn't?"

"I don't," said Caim. I had remembered that since Hufflepuff and Slytherin were sharing this class, I was going to look out of place. "Well, I don't hate them but I don't like them either."

"Well, that's your opinion," Lucas said snappishly. I looked at him with a bit of surprise.

"Yeah, it is, Caim," I said. "Personally I like them."

"Hm. I'm learning more about you every day," he said in a voice that made Lucas twitch. It wasn't sarcastic, it was more like, well, he was flirting. But he wasn't exactly pro at it.

After class, Toby walked up to Lucas and I and said, "Where is Tom, anyway?"

"Netherlands," I said. "It's a very pretty country."

"That's nice. Are you going to study anywhere?"  asked Toby, in a sort of strained voice.

"Oh, I don't know. I'd love to go to  America but oh well. I'm fine here. As long as I don't have to learn a new language to get there." I said, and then I turned the question on Lucas. He shrugged but stared, despite being blind, angrily at Toby.

Toby noticed. "Don't give me the evil eye, kid," he said. "I'm just talking to Asia."

Lucas mumbled under his breath. I sighed.

"Toby, um, I have to tell you something," I said. "Lucas, I'll be right back, okay?" once Lucas nodded, though slowly, I grabbed Toby by the upper arm and dragged him into an empty classroom. "Toby, I-"

He interrupted me. "Have I been that obvious?"

"Yes, you have. All the subtle hints in the world end up being a slap in the face," I said, and took a deep breath. "Listen... Toby: I don't like you the way you like me. You are attractive, and you do well, and I like you as a friend, but... I like someone else. I don't like being on this side of the stick, I want to be able to make you happy but, I'm not the type of person to like one person but date another. I don't want to cheat, even while I'm here in limbo with Lucas."

Toby made squinty eyes. "Lucas, eh?"

"Yeah," I said nervously, wringing my robes with my hands.

"Oh... so, you like puny little kids with problems?" he said, meanly.

"He doesn't have a problem, Toby. And he's not puny. He's about as tall as you are, and that's saying something."

"No, he has a problem. He's blind, Asia, if you haven't noticed. Blind. Blind! He won't ever be able to see you or tell you how beautiful you look or anything. He'll just play by ear, you'll have to help him everywhere like you did at the beginning. That's not being an equal partner, that's being a mother." he was getting angrier now. "With me it'll be equal, you'll be treated good, and everything will be good. With your brains you could get any job, like a Auror, and with my ethic I could get a good job anywhere. With Lucas," he spat the name, "what would you do?"

"I would make it work." I said.

"That's what my mum said when she married my dad and had me! They were poor, but they didn't make it work! Not on their own, they needed help!" Toby said.

"Listen, I'm a witch with tricks and I can do things," I said, impatient.

Toby grabbed my shoulders, being taller, it was scary. "What things? What things would help you with him?! He's BLIND!"

I shoved him away. "But he's nicer than you are. He understands me better, and that's what matters, Caim. I'm not rushing into a marriage, I'm just telling you I'm not interested in you right now! I'm young but I can make my own choices. I don't need a man to make them for me." I took a deep breath.

Toby pulled out his wand for a minute like he was considering pointing it at me. Then he put it back and said, "Fine! Do that then! Don't come running when it doesn't work out!" he stomped out of the room.

"Immature brat," I whispered.

Toby turned around. "What?"

I said it again, louder.

He turned, and walked towards me, and this time whipped out the wand. I blocked it with my own and sent it flying. I caught it and looked at him, like, 'You were saying'? His face contorted.

"Sorry, kid," I said. "But  I can take care of myself." I tossed his wand back and shoved past him, back to where Lucas was supposed to be.

He wasn't there.

"Lucas?" I said, and headed to the Slytherin common room. I knew he was in there. I didn't know the current password, because Lucas or Tom hadn't told me like they did every week, so I waited. A boy walked by.

"Hello, Asia, trying to get in?" asked Julius. He was a younger Slytherin student who I knew and who knew I visited often.

"Yes. Lucas disappeared in here and I need to talk to him."

Julius smiled. "Anything to help the lovely lady!" he said in his mock formal voice, which he used when he was talking to me, on his perfect's orders. He said the password and let me in, and I thanked him and went in.

"Hi Asia," said Rose. another Stherin but this time a girl. I had helped her with her homework on many occasions. She was only 11. "Looking for Lucas? He went upstairs."

"Thanks Rosie," I said, and went up there. He was in his dorm.

"Lucas, you okay? I talked to Toby and now-" I said, knocking, but Lucas swung the door open with so much force I toppled inside.

"What? I heard everything he said."

"I know. But I turned him down, okay? I want see how things work out with us first. Okay?"

He nodded, but we sat there in silence.
