River dipped her toe into the chilly water.
"I don't know," she said sheepishly. "It's pretty cold, and I'm pretty body-conscious."
Nora rolled her eyes. "We're here, aren't we?" she said, pointing around to Randy and Miles. Angelic was there was well, wringing out her golden hair after taking a dip in the deep water.
"C'mon!" said Angelic, splashing a handful of water on River.
"If a cheerleader like Angelic can do it, you can too," said Randy reasonably.
River made a face. Angelic was wearing one of those bikinis with the bow in the back, and it was made of a sheer fabric that showed the second black layer of the suit below. It wasn't skimpy, like something River would expect Amber to wear, but it was something River wouldn't dare try on: it showed too much skin for her taste.
Nora nudged her. Sighing, River untied the beach towel from her waist. She was wearing a pale blue tankini, just something plain she had picked up at the store on her way home. Normal stores couldn't accommodate her needs for clothing, so she usually had to shop at the more expensive monster shops. There were two holes for her wings, and a little stitching of a skull where a breast pocket would be on a shirt.
"Looks good," said Miles, and River punched him in the shoulder. "What?" he exclaimed.
"You two not dating yet?" purred Angelic.
Nora grinned impishly. "Well?"
River shook her head. "'course not," she said, blushing. "We're just friends. After all, incubus and succubus aren't exactly the best match."
"Why's that?" asked Randy, sucking on his juice-box straw. He had slipped into the water, ignoring Angelic's constant splashes aimed at him.
River sighed. "Well," she said delicately. "Incubus and succubus are, by nature, seducers. And they can only seduce and reproduce with other races, not each other, and that's why the term is so broad. As long as you are half siren and a girl, you can be a succubus. As long as you're half demon and a boy, you can be an incubus. Of course, there are exceptions, but that's the main rule." River pointed at Miles. "One exception is if you're half demon or siren, but your other race is werewolf, or if it's mermaid. Since a race can be pure or half, someone may even be an exception in several ways. usually, a monster inherits her mother's, or his father's, race."
"So it's impossible to have kids within the same race?" asked Nora.
"Only between incubus and succubus. That's why the race is never pure."
"Interesting," said Randy. "Thanks for the lesson. So you wouldn't be able to have children with Miles. Do you want kids?"
River shrugged.
"Hmm." said Angelic.
"You should still date, though," Nora chipped in again. :"Nothing wrong with that."
River smiled shyly. "Sure," she said.
"Let's stop being so serious," reasoned Miles. "We're here to have fun, right?"
Everyone grinned, and leapt into the river.
