Chapter One
The hot, swift wind of Greenleaf was one of torture. Throughout the forest where the clan resided, it was as green and fresh as it was every year, but the unconditional heat was out of the ordinary. One would think, with the river leading to the lake so close by, that the wind would get cooler as it traveled over. One would hope, but it didn't happen.
But it was on a much cooler day that Leafkit was making her rounds around the camp. She would jump up on the cool stone under the tall oaks that surrounded the camp, and strut around like her apprenticed siblings would when boasting to her that they would become great warriors. Leafkit didn't mind, because she knew she wasn't ever going to become a warrior. There was something wrong with her. Her parents, Frostface and Firestripe, would whisper about it deep into the night.
From over in the Crooked-Fates den came the young voice of Tanglefeet. But right after, the sound of him falling roughly down caused him to say, "Hey! Why'd those rotten apprentices move the moss beds over here?"
Leafkit felt sorry for him. Tanglefeet was only 13 moons old, 6 moons older than Leafkit, who should've been made an apprentice by now. She used to wonder why, before realizing that she wasn't cut out to be a warrior. She wasn't cut out to be much of anything.
"Hey!" shouted Sunpaw from the bramble tunnel that led into the camp. "You! Leafkit!"
Leafkit glanced around, her muscles rippling under her multicolored coat. She blinked, and trotted over to the large apprentice. Leafkit was dwarfed by all of the apprentices, even by most of the kits. Despite being 7 moons old, she was no bigger than the smallest kit in the nursery, who was 3 moons old. She hated how small she was, and wondered if the fact that she was this small was why everyone said something was off with her.
Sunpaw chuckled like he did whenever he got the chance to pick on Leafkit. He crossed the sandy grass in the middle of the camp to reach her, and whispered, "How does it feel to be destined to be a Crooked-Fate? You'd better go talk to them, and get used to it!"
Leafkit flinched and held in a breath, along with the venom on her tongue. Her voice came out low and weak. "Why don't you?"
Sunpaw smiled his toothy smile, his whiskers raising. "Because I'm normal. You're not. You're small, like a hawk's dinner. You're weak, like a kit!"
Leafkit cocked her head, ignoring him. She had just noticed something creeping behind her. Interested, she began to trot into the tunnel, where the figure had slunk. Sunpaw whipped around, just noticing her leaving.
"Hey!" he said. "You can't go out there!"
She ignored him once again. By now, her paws were crossing the tunnel's sandy bottom and into the undergrowth of the forest and the strewn leaves. She had ventured out here before, usually with her friends Fallenpaw and Snowpaw, but never alone. But that didn't matter at the moment. She was too focused on-
Sunpaw leaped in front of her, the leaves being thrown every which way. "Hey!" he hissed at her. "You're not allowed out here alone!"
"But you're here," she said coolly, trotting along aside him. He glanced down at her. They were the same age, but he couldn't get the fact that she was several pounds smaller than him. She was just as smart as him, but with her small body, she was so much easier to bully for him. He smiled. An opportunity.
"Sure," he said, intent on scaring her, "Have you heard the story of the white cat that stalks and kills kits?"
Leafkit glanced up at him and scoffed.
"Well, her name's Blizzardpelt, and she's a very thin white cat. She sneaks into the camp and grabs little kits who look like her... and kills them!" said Sunpaw dramatically as they continued walking.
"I don't look anything like her."
'You've got white on you," Sunpaw said impishly. "So that counts."
After walking for a few minutes, Sunpaw launched at Leafkit, grabbing her scruff and lifting her up into the air. "I got you!" he said between his teeth in a high, girly voice. "I'll get you now! You're dead!"
Leafkit hit his face with unsheathed claws and landed on her paws. "Shut up," she said sadly. She hated him bullying her like this. If it was verbal, she was fine, but she hated that. That annoyed her, made her face her so-called "problem": her size.
Something rustled the leaves around them.
"What was that?" Sunpaw hissed. They stopped.
Leafkit sighed. "What?"
A white figure jumped out at them claws outstretched, catching the light. A lean she-cat's face was so close to Leafkit that the kit had to step back. A sadistic grin crossed the cat's face, a large scar running down the left side of her face.
"Little kit, little kit..." Blizzardpelt sang softly, "why must you go? Come to me, little kit, little kit, I'll send you home. Little kit, little kit, where would you rather die? From the claws I have, or from the home you reside? Answer me quickly little kit, before I'm pulled back home.. the Forest of No Stars, a place no one knows."
Leafkit jerked awake, lying on the grass. Sunpaw was over her, glancing around wildly. "Did you see that? She disappeared..."
"Let's get back home," suggested Leafkit.
"Yeah," Sunpaw said, but something in his eyes glittered with joy, joy from seeing Leafkit scared,
