From the Huffington Post:

It turns out Wi-Fi stands for ... nothing.

Wi-Fi is a registered trademark of the Wi-Fi Alliance, formerly known as the Wireless Ethernet Compatibility Alliance. (It’s worth noting that while many people write “wifi,” “Wi-Fi” is the official spelling.)

“We needed something that was a little catchier than ‘IEEE 802.11b Direct Sequence,’” Phil Belanger explained.

It was an invented word done for marketing purposes and sounded a little like "Hi-Fi" which was well known already. It has no meaning, even though you may hear people say it stands for Wireless-Fidelity, or other things.

The Wi stands for Wireless. Not sure what the Fi stands for.
