It's not weird mate. It's literally human phycology seeking help in a time of desperation. We feel like there isn't any hope so we resort to the last thing we can think of. We don't know (and often don't believe) that anything like a deity truly exists, but our minds try to hope that there is to ease the situation because there's nothing else that can be done. Kind of like when a churchgoing Christian guy starts to pray to Allah in the middle of a tornado. Trust me mate; it's not weird, but it is a sign of desperation.
