By the way, when did y’all start playing? I started in October 2022 after my PE teacher showed us how to play four square. (The courts haven’t been used for years)

I like four-square, but I'm no good at it. Have you heard of the similar game; nine-square in the air? I'm no good at that one either.

I’ve heard of nine square but I’ve never played it. There’s no nine square courts at my school; only four square courts.

We play a version of 4 square at my school called big square.

There’s 8 squares, and every scale is about the size of a normal 4 square court.

The ball can bounce twice in your square.

Only illegal serves are:

Overhand serves

Intentionally making the ball hit another person without touching their square during a serve

Corner serves

Serves deliberately making it to where other players cannot make it to the ball

Serves going out of the 8 squares in total (serves going out of the square gets you out, serves hitting line is a redo)

Also, extra rules and cool things:

No alliances or targeting

However, there is a loophole:

Duos are allowed.

Sometimes when we have 16 or more people in the unfinished gym where we play, we will do 2 people in each square (aforementioned duos), no more.

Its super fun and frustrating.

I’ve tried playing four square duos once, it didn’t end up too well. But at the same time, each four square is different.

Also, last year’s four square (for me) definitely had alliances and targeting (the former was allowed, the latter wasn’t but nobody enforced it) but this year’s four square doesn’t.

On the last day of 5th grade, the four square I played at the time (5th grade four square) merged with 4th grade four square. Since there were more 4th graders that played four square than 5th graders, fourth graders dominated the game. Their rule that we didn’t have is that you can’t do pass-backs. If my four square banned pass-backs, then everyone (especially me) would be out immediately.

For y’all who don’t know what pass-backs are, it’s when…

Let’s say square 4 is serving to square 1. Square 1 hits the ball to square 2. Square 2 hits it back to square 1.

That’s a pass-back, and square 2 would be out if pass-backs were banned.
