how many religions are there?

A lot. Somme I know of and have seen are Muslim, Catholic, Christian, Wicca, Paganism, and some people don't have a religion. Also, I don't remember the name, but in Africa there is a religion related to Voodoo and Hoodoo.

Catholic and Christian are different in some ways but in some ways they are the same lemme me explain. Christian and Catholic both believe in God but Christians believe God sent his son Jesus to  die on the cross so we could go to heaven if we accept him. Catholics believe (like I said God) but they don't believe he died on the cross. They believe certain people were chosen to go to heaven if they do good things (which by the way is false.) If you use google and look it up, it will tell you about 4,200. But, there are new religions being created everyday, and a religion may be different in another country, so you'd have to be more specific to get a direct answer.
