As summer kicks off, you're probably excited to attend summer camps! Unfortunately, some camps require you to have a checkup before attending. And that means you may have to have (brace yourself folks) ... Shots! Now, don't get on my case for saying the dreaded word, it may happen. But I'll provide you with some tips from my experience with the horrible event.
1: Think of something funny. This sounds cliché, but if you know what to think about, it really works. Try watching a funny you-tube video on the way to the doctors office. Some suggestions are Cats Vs. Cucumbers and Screaming Goats.
2: Distract yourself. Perhaps watch a video on a device while it happens, or have a family member or guardian tell you a funny story or a joke.
3: Get it over with! The worst part of getting a shot is the anticipation. Ask your doctor or nurse if you could possibly get it done sooner rather than later. This may not be possible in some cases, but if that happens then just don't worry about it!
4: Taste. Sometimes if you are chewing on something it can make you lose focus on the needle. I have found chocolate works best ( No surprise there- Chocolate fixes everything ) but so does:
. Chewing Gum
. Soda
. A Granola Bar
. An Apple Slice.
These are just more flavorful/chewy foods but even sipping water works.
5: Get something to be happy about. Try asking a parent or guardian if you can get a treat after your shot (doughnut, icecream e.t.c.). Or maybe ask if you can do something fun.
I hope you find these useful, and don't worry!
