PROLOGUE...

The flashing red, orange, and blue lights blazed against her thin, pale eyelids. The gentle voice of a police officer, the soft touch of his hand behind her stone cold back.

"It's OK.We'll get you to a hospital." he whispered. "It's OK."

"But I want to go home," whimpered the girl in a trembling whisper.

"I know," the officer's voice broke as he lifted the girl onto a clean, white-sheeted stretcher. "But you'll be OK, you'll be just fine..." his tone shivered as if he was unsure of his words just as much as the injuries girl was.

The skid of tires rang in the girl's ears. All she could think of was the Crash, which she had just escaped from. The rumble of traffic in the immeadite distance was oblivious to her: all she heard was the agonised screeches of her family and the cars. She thought of nothing. Nothing at all.

Prologue

Holly was staring blankly at the casket in front of her. Smoothing down the folds of her fancy black lace dress, the timid four-year-old stepped forward and touched the white quilt laid inside the coffin. But hands, presumably her sobbing father's, where restraining her as the priest blandly closed the cot-- and the figure within-- closed.

But, Holly, determined to see the mysterious person resting on the snowy blankets, strolled forward and lodged her hand into the crack between coffin lid and side. Curiosity welding its tempting sword, urged her to lift the top up and observe the figure. She surrendered to her fanscination, and pushed open the top.

A pretty woman was lying on the sheets. Holly reached out her finger to trace the thick black hair, so like hers. Then she glanced down at the shut eyes; she knew that if they were open they would be announcing terror. Then she touched the pale skin-- but almost at once leaped back; the scaley, rotting feel was ominous and frightening to Holly.

Holly had had a feeling that someone had been missing from the funeral's proceedings-- her mother had been missing, and she was lying in the casket, dead and forever gone.
