Yes, but he was the one who brought European influences into America (I know he also killed a ton of Indians, but there wasn't much preventing it).

Yeah! I would also not like to debate this; it's very simple. Those who come first have the absolute right to be celebrated over those who come and try to forcefully take away their rights to their home.

Columbus day was when he landed on America, I agree that Indigenous people should be celebrated, but it shouldn't replace a day that was already there for a valid reason.

Good point, triple-J, about the European influences (not the killing of Native Americans and viruses). But I’d rather celebrate Indigenous Peoples’ Day than Columbus Day.

People credit him for "discovering America", not just for landing on it. It shouldn't be a holiday due to that, because he didn't discover it. Leif Eriksson was the first European to discover it, but he wasn't the first person either. Native Americans came first and therefore should be the only ones celebrated on October 9th.

It doesn't matter who came first. For example, MLK wasn't the first person to pose rights for black people, but he was the most significant contributer. Likewise, Columbus wasn't the first person to discover America, but he was the first person to colonize it and make it known unto the world (and also since the original claim was that he was dumb, I will address that too. Columbus's thinking was ahead of his time, he deducted that since the earth was round, that there may be a more efficient route to India, and although that was wrong, it still portrays his intelligence and imagination.)

I love the 9th because it is a day where I can finally express my love for the Nordic countries. Even thought I am Venezuelan, I have Autisim and i feel like I can't express my love of Nordic Countries
