Why is 11x11=121 not 111?

So basically, I've been taught that multiplication is just addition but repeated, and so you're just adding 11 to itself 11 times; 11+11+11+11+11+11+11+11+11+11+11, which when added up is 121. I don't know how else to explain this.

If you do long multiplication and multiply 11x11, you get 121. You can also make an array to show that 11x11 is 121 (but that would mean counting 121 squares in an array)
