Introduction
What is Harry Potter? It is a book series about a boy named Harry Potter. The series was written by J.K. Rowling and there have been movies about the series as well. There are eight books in the series. They are:
- Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's (Philosopher's in the U.K.) Stone
- Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets
- Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban
- Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire
- Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix
- Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince
- Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows

Main Characters
There are three main characters in Harry Potter.
Harry Potter
When he was a baby, his parents Lily and James Potter were murdered by a dark wizard (that means he's evil, if you really must know) named Lord Voldemort. So, a half-giant named Hagrid took baby Harry on a flying motorcycle until he ended up on a street called 4 Privet Drive. Then a wizard named Albus Dumbledore took baby Harry and put him on the doorstep of Lily Potter's sister.
These people were named Petunia, Vernon, and Dudley. Their last name was Dursley. They were not wizards and treated Harry horribly. Harry lived in a cabinet in the basement and got little food. He had no toys and Petunia and Vernon purposely forgot his birthday every year. Harry's brother Dudley teased him. One day at the zoo, Harry talked to a snake and it broke out of its glass cage. Harry got in trouble. Then, letters kept filling up the Dursley's fireplace. Vernon loathed it. So he tried to stop the letters from coming. Since that did not work, they moved to a small wooden shack on a tall rock above the sea. Then, Hagrid came and told Harry he was a wizard and that he had been accepted into a magical school called Hogwarts. Hagrid gave Harry and birthday cake and took him to Diagon Alley to shop for school supplies.

Hermione Granger
She was not born a witch. Her parents were dentists. But one day, she got an acceptance letter into Hogwarts and then went there.
When she did go there, she proved to be very smart and became friends with Harry Potter.

Ron Weasley
He was born in a place called The Burrow which is in Ottery St. Catchpole. His parents are Molly and Arthur Weasley. He has 5 older brothers and 1 younger sister. His brothers are Bill, Charlie, Percy, Fred, and George. His sister is Ginny.
When he got to Hogwarts, he became friends with Harry Potter.

Houses
There are 4 Hogwarts Houses: Slytherin, Gryffindor, Ravenclaw, and Hufflepuff.
Gryffindors are brave and chivalrous. The mascot of Gryffindor is a lion. The colors of Gryffindor are gold and red.
Slytherins are sly and cunning. The mascot of Slytherin is a snake. The colors of Slytherin are green and silver.
Ravenclaws are witty and intelligent. The mascot of Ravenclaw is an eagle. The colors of Ravenclaw are blue and bronze. The bronze is silver in the movies.
Hufflepuffs are kind and caring. The mascot of Hufflepuff is a badger. The colors of Hufflepuff are yellow and black.
The Sorting Hat tells you what house you are in.
Quidditch
Quidditch is a sport played by wizards on broomsticks. There are three balls. The quaffle is big and red. It is thrown into the goalposts to score points. The bludgers are black. There are two of them. They move quickly and try to knock players off their broomsticks. The Golden Snitch is small and golden. It has wings and moves quickly. The team with the person that catches it wins the game.
The keepers defend the goalposts. The beaters beat bludgers with bats. The seeker looks for the Golden Snitch.
Wizarding Vocabulary
Muggle: a person who is not a wizard
Parseltongue: 1. a wizard who can talk to snakes 2. the language snakes speak.
Half Blood: a wizard who had one Muggle parent.
Pure blood: a wizard who had two Wizard parents.
Squib: a wizard who cannot do magic
Muggle born: a wizard who had muggle parents
