Here are some tips on drawing anime eyes! I draw "shonen style" eyes, which means my eyes aren't as glam as you may want, but I'll go through the main ways I draw eyes! Let's go!!! ;D
Male Eyes
Matured
Male eyes are technically drawn small in the shonen style. Tips I have:
- If you draw the male eyes and they take up more than half the face, they are totally off. Male eyes can make an otherwise female looking character look more masculine.
- Don't draw heavy eyelashes. Reserve those for females or child eyes.
- If the pupil becomes nothing more than a small dot when drawn in between the eye, you are doing it the shonen way!
- Keep them serious. When drawing male eyes, they don't betray a lot of emotion, so keep that in mind.
- Keep them small as well, as noted before.
- Keep the top diagonal. Instead of curving it into a rounder eye type, keep it diagonal for a mad or mean look.
Young/ Teenaged or Childish
Younger eyes give you more freedom. Here are some tips to keep them looking male.
- You may be tempted to draw them extremely large or bubbly: don't. Boys' eyes are not very pretty. In my style, I do draw young boys' eyes a lot like I draw my girls' eyes, but I have a particular way I do them.
- Keep them medium-sized. Some artists keep the young male's eyes as small as the matured one's (for teens, don't try this for children), but you must alter the face to make the kid look young.
- Don't add a lot of shines or eyelashes.
- You may keep them slanted or not, your call.
Female Eyes
Matured
Matured girls' eyes are very much like a matured male's, but slightly bigger.
- If you'd like, follow the matured male eyes tips as well as these.
- You may add eyelashes, lightly or darkly.
- Adding a black shade to the top of the eye is a good call as well.
- You may make them look more bubbly, but keep them small.
Young/ Teenaged or Childish
For young girls' eyes, the tips I have for you are contrary to the boys'.
- Make them round, tall, slanted: whatever. Anime girls' eyes are very diverse, but these tips are for shonen.
- Make the pupils wide, not touching the top or bottom of the eye, for a girlish cheerful look.
- Add as much or as little detail as you'd like!
- Making the eyes dark give them a glamor feel.
