WARNING: This post is a bit graphic and it's about death and drowning, so don't read if you are younger than 10, or get triggered easily, one part about my cousin is also really sad.

So, when my mom was a teenager she would go to Pakistan and go to the beach with her family every year. So, once when she was 11, my mom went to the beach and there was this deep ocean, she didn't know how to swim and her mom didn't know how to either, everyone else did, but my mom wasn't supervised. She went with her cousin (who knew how to swim) and one day at the beach when she was swimming with her, the ocean became a bit deep and my cousin was allll the way in front of my mom, and my mom tried to reach her cousin. Anyways, then she saw her cousin's swimming technique. She swam face front, so that's what my mom did, but she couldn't keep her feet up, she knew she was going to die, she didn't risk anything and she just let her body slip and drown. So, my mom drowned, and then when my grandpa (her dad) was swimming he saw she was in the water unconshis, and he saved her.

So, that was a long time ago, when I wasn't even born, it was like in the 90's. So, anyways, about 2 or 3 years ago, my cousin died, because none of his family knew how to swim, his sister didn't, and his brother died too (of drowning), neither did his mom or dad. His friends did and that's who he was with right now, (He wasn't with his family, he was 20) anyways, this story is kinda famous in Pakistan, it was on the news EVERYWHERE in Pakistan. It was on the cover story of a famous Pakistani newspaper, it said "The ocean ate college boy", so he was swimming, where his friends were playing games on the sand of the beach, so he was struggling, already then the ocean wave came high, he quickly raised up his hand for help, but it was too late. He drowned and died. When his friends and family wondered where he was, they called the police, and they tried to investigate. Later, they found his body, dead in water. Idk why, the boy's brother didn't know how to swim, and he died, then my cousin died too. That day my mom became sick (she was too sad) that my cousin was about to get married and was about to graduate and he just died.

So, now I'm saying, my dad doesn't know how to swim, my sister doesn't know how to swim, my mom doesn't know how to swim, no one knows how to swim okay!! And the thing is, we took swimming lessons since we were 4, then we had to move and start our swimming lessons all over again, then we moved again. Now, it's COVID and my family thinks we are going to die of COVID. And both of my parents know CPR and they say it's neccasary for living life, you might die of chocking, and learning to ride a bike is neccasary. My mom was so sad and shocked about my cousin's death, but for some reason she says "Swimming isn't neccasary". I almsost drowned in my bffs pool party too. I didn't actually drown, just almost. My parents let my sister swim anywhere, even in deep places, they say "It will make her brave", and I say "But she doesn't know how to swim, can't we just take swimming lessons"? And she was like, "No, there are many people at swimming school, and we'll catch COVID".

So, I know someone in our family is going to die like my cousin did. Like my mom did (My mom didn't die, she drowned, but her dad knew how to swim, my dad doesn't). So, can someone help me persuade to my parents that we are all going to die unless we take swimming lessons! I skipped my end of year class pool party cuz it was deep water and I didn't know how to swim. My parents can ride bikes, they can code, they can CPR, they can read "War and Peace"! They just can't swim!!!!!!

Hi! Thanks for explaining. I understand why you posted this. Thank you for giving us some evidence. Honestly, don't be too dramatic. I am sorry for your loss, but it is better to stay a little zen. Jane out!

Personally, I took lessons a long time ago and I know a few things but can't consistently swim. But if I'm at a pool for a few hours, I'll figure it out. I recommend staying near shallow sections of water. If I ever have trouble I pretty much just try to do a back float. It was the one thing in swimming lessons I was the best at lol. I've never been to a beach or things like that, only pools and such. Personally, it seems to me like your parents aren't gonna move on this subject. It's likely that after your cousin's death that swimming became a bit of a sore spot. Personally, I think that it's unlikely for another person in your family to die the same way, however, possible.

That said, I'll try to be a little more helpful here. According to BRIGHTSIDE, there are a few ways to keep yourself from drowning at least for a little while. Firstly, panicking and flailing your arms is only going to make you drown quicker, so if you find yourself in that kind of situation, try not to panic. Also, panicking can mean you hyperventilate, which can be very bad since having oxygen in your lungs helps make you more flamboyant (floaty). So you would need to calm down first, and if you can get your head above water, try to breathe normally rather than big or small breaths because both of those can be bad when you exhale. Secondly, after calming down, there are a couple of ways you can keep yourself above water. One is to try and float on your back. It's pretty low-energy, so you can stay afloat longer. Make sure your ears are submerged to keep strain off of your neck, and if your legs start to go down, do little kicks to keep them up. Do not arch your back, try to keep your body as straight as possible. Keep your arms either elbows bent and hands behind your head, or keep them at your side, palms facing up either way. The other way is treading which I feel could use up more energy and be harder. I'm not sure how to explain the technique of that, so-

Okay first just because you said no one under ten should read this its probably not going to stop anyone ten and under number 2 your chances of dying from Covid are like 5 out of 100 so we are not all going to die even though some do die of Covid and I am very sorry for your losses
