Namesake is a term used to characterize a person, place, thing, quality, action, state, or idea that has the same, or a similar, name to another - especially if the person or thing is actually named the same. For example, if someone has the same name as you, then they are your namesake.

It means you named something after something else with the same name. Sounds confusing, but there are plenty of examples. You might live in a city called Jamestown that was named after the first English settlement (Jamestown in Virginia). One would said that city was a namesake of the first colony. You might even be a namesake yourself if you were named after another relative.
