I think you're thinking of Rosa Parks! It has been sooo long since I read/studied about her (Third Grade!), but she was part of the civil rights movement. Of course, what made her famous was that she refused to give her seat up on the bus for a white man (Rosa was African American, and they often were not treated kindly through most of the 20th century). She had been there first, and the color of their skin was no way to settle the score, so she did not give her seat up. Sadly, I think she was arrested after the incident.
