The Creature Creed
The wind was icy and fierce against her face, whipping back her dappled brown, black, and white fur. But she trudged on, her paws crunching on the pure white snow, the cold ting burning her pawpads. Now she could not stop, she could not turn away from the destiny that was planted on her path, no matter how hard it was for her to tread it.
She had to get the sacred rules of her kind...of the dogs. She was motivated to continue, her heart ignited with a fresh, blazing, new passion. She turned her soft brown eyes to the shining sky above. It was a bright gold, extending for miles, like one endless sun-filled river.
Suddenly, a small round head popped out behind a sloping gray stone to her right. "Mama!" the white and brown pup squealed, clamoring over the rock. Lola glanced at her. The pup gazed back steadily.
Lola broke eye contact. "Look, Lily." she breathed, gesturing far into the distance. A eagle, black feathers outlined against the gleaming yellow-flecked sky, spiraled overhead.
"Who is that?" Lily turned up her nose in distaste.
"Only a bird..." Lola grinned broadly. "But its gonna teach us the mysterious realms of the Creature Creed. Shall we?" she flicked her tail in a sweeping motion and they set off again, paws crashing into snow.
They padded across the white grass until the golden sky engulfed them. Then they were gone.
