Are Nordic and Scandinavian countries the same thing? If no what's the difference?
by (731k points)

Well, It depends.

GEOGRAPHICALLY : Scandinavia refers to a the Scandinavian penninsula (Norway, Sweden, Denmark)

AS AN ETHNIC TERM :  Scandinavian refers to anybody who lives or is from Scandinavia OR someone who dosen't live in Scandinavia but is a descendant of the Vikings (for example, a person who is mostly from Scotland who has documented proof of Viking ancestry is a Scandinavian)

NORDIC AS AN ETHNIC TERM

Nordic, as a Ethnic term may mean

  1. ///THIS PART IS DEBATED/// somebody who lives in one of the Nordic countries or their territories (Greenland, Faroe islands, Åland islands, Sápmi, Svalbard) regardless if they were born there or if they are immigrants from diferent countries  (There is a debate over if people of diferent countries who live in Scandinavia are considered Scandinavians)
  2. Somebody who lives outside of Nordic countries or their territories but has registered Nordic ancestry, since Nordic countries do a great job promoting Genealogy and keeping records (Scandinavian-Americans, Scandinavian-Canadians etc) Most foundations helping Scandinavian-Americans consider a person who has quarter or more Scandinavian ancestry as a Scandinavian-American
  3. ///THIS PART IS DEBATED/// an Indigenous Nordic person, Such as a Greenlander, Kven, Ingrian Finns or Sámi regardless where they live. a lot of people consider these people to fall under Indigenous People instead of Ethnic Scandinavians. A person is considered Sámi if they have 50% Sámi ancestry, and a Kven if they had Finnish ancestors residing in Norway in the 1800s and later

AS A CULTURAL TERM : Usually, Scandinavia and Nordic is under the same term. There may be a Scandinavian festival that also has celebrations dedicated to Finland and Iceland. There are sometimes maps that only show Norway and Sweden as the Scandinavian penninsula due to the Mountain border. Nordic territories are usually not shown (espiecally Sápmi, or they just use the No-No L word for Sápmi.)

Hope this helps.

is The Emigrants based on a true story?
by (731k points)

There is a big debate on wheter it is real or not. According to Vilheim Moberg himself, the characters are fictional. However the plot is based off real Swedish history, and in the books there are notes about the real story behind the books. There is however, a replica of Karl and Kristina's house in Minnesota, and various Museums about Swedish-American Immigration, One being dedicated to the Emigrants Novels . A lot of people think the characters are real due to the vivid descriptions of the Swedish-American life.

The real answer. No. But there are a lot of Non-Fiction books about Scandinavian-Americans, both present and their history. According to GoodreadsThe Emigrants is historical fiction, a classic and a Dramatic book

What does Swedish traditional clothing look like?
by (731k points)
+1

*BREATH*

usually, Swedish Traditional clothing is yellow and blue to honor the colors of the Sweden flag. several areas in Sweden, like Smaland and Dalarna have their own traditional clothes. Sami Gahktis are used among the Sami people in Northern Sweden. This is how the National Traditional Swedish dress

(that is not me, I dont own a Swedish traditional dress but I own a Bunad)

There is also traditional attire for Overseas Swedes and Swedish-American people, there were also traditional attire for Historical Sweden (Kingdom of Norway and Sweden, Colonial Sweden etc)

What was the cultural and socioeconomic significance of the battle at Stamford Bridge, and how big is it of a turning point in Scandinavian history with comparisons to other significant turning points? What was the most significant turning point of Scandinavian history in your opinion?
by (731k points)
well the Stanford bridge was one of the most important Viking battles (besides the battle of Lyndsfare), also to me the biggest turning point is when the Vikings became Christian (I thought they were gonna be Vikings for MUCH longer, silly 12 year old me thought they were Vikings until the 1400s)

also, it helped spred Norse culture throught the UK, and Ive seen youve been listening to Harald Foss (I bet the only reason peaople know about Stanford bridge outside the UK and Scandinavia (or if you attend Nordic heritage center services weekly like Inga does) is due to Harald Foss (he is the best)

Why do all nordic countries have technically the same flag except they palette swap it
by (731k points)

Denmark's flag came 1st. the only actually well known outliers are Sapmi and Greenland who are copies of each other (the colors in Sapmi represent the elements in the Sami Religion and the stripes represent the 4 countries the Sami live in) and the Raven Banner (obvuious because the Vikings were not Christian when the Raven Banner was established, the Raven represented Óðinn in Norse Paganism). in historical times, the Kalmar Union and the Sweden-Norway flag were the closest to the modern Nordic flag design establishment.

The 2-color/3-color Cross pattern found in the flags of the Nordic countries is called Daneborg. It is mostly used for the  Nordic countries, however there are Russian, German and Dutch provinces who use the Daneborg flag as well.

Im sorry I wrote a full essay about the history behind the Daneborg flags I just love answering questions about nordic stuff

also, what is weird is that the greenland flag is supposed to represent "the Equality between the Ice and land" which is very Ironic for a place that is 98% Ice
