Today's math problem of the day is:

In the zany land of Numbronia, the citizens have a peculiar way of counting. They use a special rule to determine the value of a number. The rule is as follows:

1. If a number is odd, triple it.

2. If a number is even, divide it by 2.

Now, Bob has a magical number, and when he applies the Numbronia rule to it 5 times, he gets the number 81. If Alice starts with the same magical number and applies the rule 8 times, she ends up with the number 2.

What is the magical number, and can you explain the bizarre Numbronia rule to your fellow Earthlings?

For the one dividing a number by 2 eight times and getting 2, the magic number is 512.

However, that can’t be possible for the one tripling something five times to get 81… for that one, it would be about 0.33.

Also, to explain the rule, if you have an odd number like 1, 3, or 5, for example, you multiply that number by 3. If you have an even number like 2, 4, or 6, you divide that by 2.
