Okay, so usually I'm pretty biased and don't like anime. I've just had some bad experiences with it in the past, so I never watched any. But I did watch one last night, and HOLY MOLY it's one of my top 5 movies now!! IT IS SO GOOD I LOVE IT SOOOO MUCH!!
It's called "In This Corner of the World," and you can find it on Tubi, which is free and doesn't require you to sign in or have an account. I think it's automatically installed on most modern televisions.
Basically, it's about a young Japanese woman during WWII who just got married, and now has to deal with both everyday tasks and the war effort against the Soviet Union and the United States. It's a really fascinating point of view!
One thing to note however is that is is over two hours long.
I must warn you though, it does get a little graphic towards the end. It's also a very sad movie in some parts. It is rated PG-13.
SPOILERS (it may be graphic):
The main character is walking with her young niece after a airstrike, but they unknowingly stop right next to an undetonated bomb that buried itself in the ground. She notice's one second too late, and her niece is killed and the main character loses her hand.
At the end, a little girl is being led by a woman who is covered in blood, and who is missing nearly half her body. They stop and sit down, and she dies. However, the little girl that was with her does not know that, so she continues sitting with her until her body is completely rotten. She only leaves when the flies won't leave her alone. The little girl is also covered in lice and parasites.
There is frequent bombing. It was during WWII.
Although not shown, the main character's parents die at some point in the movie.
The movie also depicts the drop of the nuclear bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The main character's sister lives in Hiroshima, and survives. However, when she visits her sister, the sister feels a little ill, and shows her the purple/ black spots on her arm. Little do they both know that this is a symptom of radiation poisoning.
There is a quick scene towards the beginning where you can see almost all of one of the girl's naked body. It's mainly just a backshot while her and her sister are in the washroom. It caught me so off guard But it's really nothing.
ANYWAYS, I really suggest the movie! It is beautifully done, and if you don't mind the violence, it really is a great movie!
