useless fact, Småland had the highest Emigration rate in the Norway-Sweden Union.
1.5 Million Swedes Emigrated at that time. That was 1/3 of the population at that time.
Well... 1/4 of all those Swedes lived in Småland.
Småland was the most affected due to the geography (Very rocky soil) as well as a government law. The Government law, which affected all of Sweden and Norway but affected Southern Scandinavians (People living in Southern Norway and Sweden) the most. The law was that farm land could be a certain number, as it could be enviormently dangerous. The law also included housing, which meant that Swedish families (Note. The Avarage family had 4 or 5 kids in the 1800s) could only share a small home.
The Great Famine (1867-1869) Affected Smålanders and Skåndians the most. Not only most of the population at that time didn't have good farmland, but the government didn't really care.
Another Useless fact : There is a trail in Småland simply dedicated to Swedish Emigrants, as it was belived that they walked on the trail. The trail is simply and it called Utvandrarleden. (English: The Emigrant's Trail) and it's pretty cool :D There's also a museum about this, called The House of Emigrants. and it has to do with the cult owner author Vilhelm Moberg.
Sorry for my long rant. It's Just interesting how Småland is not only known for IKEA (IKEA was founded in Småland, but during world war 2 which dosen't count cuz of Sweden's Neutrality) so yeh
