I got mine at nine, and now I'm 11.
I'll say, it's pretty hard and painful- But sometimes I feel nothing.
It honestly depends on what you feel comfortable using, but I recommend PaDs because you don't have to- Nevermind.

It's the most comfy thing that I know.
You can use a heating pad on your belly to reduce the pain, you can drink teas,and you can sit back and relax.
Eating dark chocolate (The rich kind) can also somehow help with the pain. Make sure to wear black or really dark pants or skirts so that IT can't show.
Focusing on your favorite thing can help. Sometimes when I'm on mine, I like to dance and that takes the pain away and helps me focus on my dancing!
