Just like it sounds. It is when continents drift apart. Millions of years ago they say the earth was one big mass of land surrounded by water. Over time they broke off and formed continents that drifted apart. Even today they still move, but it all happens too slow to notice, like about the speed your nails grow (1 cm per year).
