A young and lovely woman stared back at Catalina’s blue eyes as she spoke beautiful words to the little girl.
“Catalina, ¿estás estresada, querida?” she asked very soft and polite.
Catalina, are you stressed, my dear?
Catalina looked down at her shoes, then up again. It didn’t take a genius to know what she was thinking. The woman nodded at her, without any astonishment in her face. She seemed indeed understanding, and indeed a good person. It was only when she put her hand on her shoulder that made Catalina recognize who she was.
“M-m-Mamá?” Catalina stuttered, with big tears in her eyes and a smile on her face. The joy she was having was indescribable, but it seemed to flood every part of her body like waves crashing on a beach. She had almost forgotten how happiness felt like due to all the stress she was having. Her worries drifted away as her arms grasped around her dear mother, with laughs coming out from both of them.
This was beautiful. This was what it felt like to have her mother with her again. All she could think about was the presence of the lady in front of her, and the warmth of her familiar hugs. But a thought that was spinning in Catalina’s mind for a very long time slipped out of her mouth.
“¿Dónde fuiste?” asked Catalina with a worried look on her face.
Where did you go?
The grateful mother just laughed. Her giggles,Catalina noticed, was different from her regular ones she used to do. After what seemed like a while, she spoke. And the words she said was something Catalina would never forget.
“¡Oh cariño! Todavía me he ido. Pero sigo aquí.” she told her daughter.
Oh darling! I am still gone. But I am still here.
Catalina looked at her with confusion in her eyes. She never spoke a word, nor moved a muscle. What does she mean? How can you be gone but still here? The thought of what the answer was made her shiver with fear and gasp.
“Quieres decir ... no no no ... no es eso ... estás aquí, ¿verdad, Madre?”
You mean ... no no no ... it's not that ... you're here, are you, Mother?
The last moment with her dear mom was the worst. The beautiful lady faded away with a horrific screech and red eyes. The disappearance left Catalina in the dark room screaming “¿Dónde estás? ¿Qué? ¿Dónde estás?” Where are you? What? Where are you? with the same sorrow and pain when her mother left her once before. After a gasp of terror, Catalina’s eyes opened wide and she found herself left crying in her empty bedroom, alone with no sight of her mother.
