In 1793, there were a few scattered public schools, but they were uncommon. They were mostly for poor children, so in the areas where there weren't any, kids mostly worked. For aristocratic kids, there were private schools for boys, and a few for girls. However, most girls were taught by a tutor, and then by their mother on how to run a household. At that time, there were free African Americans, and in small communities free blacks there was usually a small school. However, they almost never mixed with white children. At this time it as legal to teach slaves how to read, so some learned from their masters or their masters children.
