It is what you need to do something. I think people doing experiments use the term more, but it can apply to anything where you set something up.

For example, I might need a test tube connected to a burner for heating water. That combo of stuff is the apparatus. I could just say that the apparatus is ready to my teacher instead of having to repeat "test tube connected to burner" is ready.
