Prologue
Tussling her locks of golden-brown hair behind her ear, the mother’s eyes stung with salty tears. Her embrace as warm as rays of sun. Her petite arms wrapped around the 12-year-old boy with dark hair and ceramic skin stained with his mother’s kisses. “This was the same thing last year,” the boy muttered under his cool breath. It is true—Hogwarts was nothing new for the family. The beige tinted letter disheveled in the boy’s left hand was the letter for North’s second year, coming from Hogwarts, school of all this magical: in the most literal sense.
“I know you’ll get to see your friends again, sweetie. I just can’t bare to have you gone.” The mother moaned, her voice soft and youthful. North rolled his ivory-colored eyes. “Please mum, my sister will be there for her last year. Is it her last? Well, anyways, we have all dealt with it before. I won’t be alone—” he declared, letting go of his mother’s midriff. He was standing in a field of tall grass, itching on his grey khakis.
“Your sister will drive you to the train station, okay?” the mother said, her lean fingers tracing her rosy lips. North nodded, hopping in the rustic car’s back seat. Columbia, his 17-year-old sister sat in the driver’s seat. “Buckle up!” Columbia declared, starting the motor. The car sped off into the dirt road that hurdled its way to the Hogwarts station.
At first, a regular looking station with plenty of muggles crowding around, their minds blazing off and their eyes elsewhere. Noah had his bags and Columbia’s bags on a golden chart. After they scurried their way through the mindless muggles, a wooden brick wall stood in front of them. “You know the drill.” Sighed North. He heaved himself through the wall, leading himself in 9 ¾, the place where the Hogwarts express takes off. Columbia followed along.
The sight of wizards and witches letting off their children were all the two saw. A toot of the trains whistle soon distracted them, blaring their ears. North caught sight of a small, young girl with her parents siding her. He started at them with mystery brawling him, even though she looked like a normal bubbly 11 year old.
“C’mon North! Show the man your ticket.” Columbia said, stepping up on the Hogwarts express. North plucked them out of his pocket, giving them to the grimy man with a sour expression spilling over his face. “Get on.” The man huffed, pushing the two into the train’s corridor. It was a red train with velvety colored insides.
“Here’s where we sit.” Said Columbia, pulling open the slide doorways of their compartment. Then she continued to put the luggage down under the seats.
“I can’t wait for the candy cart to buzz along already!” Buzzed North. He started to play with his white peter pan collar.
“Don’t worry. I hear some cart rolling down the aisle.” Replied Columbia with a loud huff. She crossed her legs, laying her head back into the seat. After a few minutes of silent rolling the compartment, North spoke up.
“Did you see that young girl? Maybe nine? Well, youngest ten, but—” he went on, “There’s a bunch of new yearers.” Columbia sighed at his remarks. She flipped her brunette curls of hair to her back. “Yeah. I bet she’ll bother you, North.” Columbia said with cynicism plaguing her tone.
“Really?”
