Chapter One: Murmurs of a Stricken Discussion
Myrtle Grayson was always a quiet, shy child with plenty of secrets, many if which she hid very well. She always talked to the wall before going to bed, and she said she could hear voice beyond it, replying to her. Her parents were very troubled by this, and sent her off to boarding school, where her strangeness just kept growing.
Overall, Myrtle was a likeable child. Everyone agreed she was interesting when she wasn't shut up in her own mind, talking to the voices inside it. She was in one of these discussions with herself when voices floated into her room.
"Grayson? Did yer say Grayson?"
"Yes, I did. Blimey, her parents are divorced now. Should we tell her, tell the child?"
"No, laddie. She can figure out for herself."
"For herself? How's the bloody child gonna find out about this?"
"She can talk to supernatural forces, can't she? Let them tell her."
"Sir, the child is touched in the head! No way she could--"
The voices came nearer as the two men approached the room in which Myrtle lived. The rusty door banged open as they emerged, their eyes gleaming.
"Grayson, your mum and dad--"
"Have been divorced," finished Myrtle tonelessly.
The younger of the two men shook his head. "Blimey, you still remind me of Tom Riddle," he reflected dully.
Myrtle slipped off the bed. "The voices did not tell me of such a thing, divorce." She said.
"Voices aren't real, Myrtle..."
The girl glared at him sternly. "In my mind, they are."
