Chapter 12
Math class was very successful; Professor Goldman, the teacher for that class, stared Nicolas down while aggressively handing him his paper with a large red A+ in the corner. Nicolas took that as a sign of tolerance and left, standing by the door of the classroom and anxiously waiting for his sister to leave. Even though he had mixed emotions about her, he was still very interested in her life as a seemingly only child.
He eventually saw her walk out of the classroom with her usual poker face, not a care about anyone else in the world. He wondered if she even acknowledged him during Introduction Class, or maybe when he was called up to Sylvester for no reason. He was tempted to follow her when he suddenly realized he was still on rocky terms for Azure, and he now seeked out to find her instead of his emotionally vacant twin.
Shortly after seeing his sister leave, he saw Azure not too far behind, and he tried to catch up with her. He was a little delayed with the crossing children who bumped into him frequently, finding that his sister wasn't the only one here without a care in the world. Struggling, he finally walked somewhere near Azure in the hallway. He tried getting her attention, constantly tapping on her shoulder in hopes of making amends. He was willing to talk about her worries, as he was feeling the unusual absence of headaches that portrayed annoyance.
He found it very difficult keeping up with her, and it began to seem like she was speeding up every attempt he took to get her attention. Finally, he called, "Azure!", and the girl abruptly turned around. "What do you want from me?!" She snapped, making him jump backwards a little. He didn't think it was possible for her to be this angry, but then again, he only met her 9 hours ago. "I just wanted to let you know," he said softly, straightening himself, "that I'm sorry for my ignorance. I'm open to talk about Zachary."
She scoffed, looking up for a second as if there were an angel who could help her with this situation. "Nicolas, you don't have to act like you care. You hated Zachary from the start, and I get that. I feel that way all the time. But he's my brother, and I still love him no matter what, but he's of no concern to you." She shook her head. "Why would you continue your act?"
"Because it's not an act!" Replied Nicolas loudly. Azure made a subtle change in expression. "Azure, you two are the only other kids who wanted to befriend me. Others wouldn't even try, I push people away just with my gaunt appearance. But your brother didn't care; he came to me with an open hand and a smile on his face, going unphased when I wouldn't react to his bright expressions. And I do find him annoying, but I also didn't know how much I needed people like you guys in my life. It's been hard, I told you on the train, and I've been lost. You guys have been helping me navigate. I don't know why I've come to trust you so easily, but that's the case. I want to find Zachary with you!" He had a determined glint in his eye.
Azure looked at him thoughtfully. Making a smacking sound with her tongue, she finally let up. "Fine. We get to work after lunch, he could be anywhere on this site," she said authoritatively. Nicolas smirked, holding his hand out for a seal on the deal. She seemed to think about it for a moment, then shook her head quickly. "No need. We're friends now, not acquaintances."
She then smiled and turned around. "Let's go to class, shall we?"
