SONG OF THE DAYYYY
Jumps from da Void
Hey, Hello, Hejså, Heilogsæl and Buorres My Lovely Vikings. It’s me, Carly. Your local Non-Nordic Nordic Girl with another Viking Diaries entry
So, The Greatest Book in the Multiverse….
I actually had multiple opinions on what the best book in the Multiverse is, and they all change. Somehow I went from Junie B Jones at 9 years old to Dork Diaries at 11 years old to The Emigrants at 13 years old.
My new favorite book series changes every 2 years. Noice
Well, That’s not what this post is about. This is about a book I found while cleaning my library Erik Vs Everything That I liked last year
Also Elo, Be warned. The representation of Norwegian-Americans in this book is really goofy, and I can’t believe I believed what this book said.
So, The book is about this 9-year old kid named Erik Sheepflattner (Not the Goofy Army Surname) who is scared of everything but has Viking ancestors so his whole family is very mad at him cuz of that. He gets sent to Minnesota (ofc Minnesota, the only states with Scandinavian-Americans/jk) and he wins a bike race and stuff
This book concerns me. As a Scandinavian History nerd myself, I can comfirm that the Viking age isn’t the only part of Scandinavian history. 12-year old me Liked it because funny (and because my dad wanted to me read something with a message) AND BECAUSE OF THIS BOOK I CALLED SCANDINAVIAN-AMERICANS “MODERN VIKINGS” OR 5 MONTHS. Luckly I’m Educated now.
Anyways, the only thing I actually liked about this book is Brunhilde, who is a 16-year old girl who is a Scandinavian history nerd like me. I barely see other people my age range (13 to 15 years old) who love Scandinavia (in case you are wondering, Nihara is 13 as well, And Jordan is 12, and the majority of people I met who like Scandinavian countries are in ther 20s or 30s) And she is cool. She is technically the only accurate representation of Norwegian-Americans in the whole book.
So? Well, Usually it’s hard finding books on (Modern) Scandinavian-Americans that aren’t very stereotypical. There is, however a picture book series (it’s for little kids so uhh) Called Anna and The Scandinavian Hearts, it is about a 7-year old Scandinavian-American (she’s both Norwegian and Swedish) Girl named Anna who learns about Scandinavian Culture via crafts, and it is a cute series. I have read it to Logan and even he likes it :)
So this is basically more of a rant and less than a Viking diaries entry, but anywayswho I just want to talk about this cuz it’s goofy.
Bye Vikings! Hope you have a wonderful day.
