I yawned widely, on the morning of the Hogsmeade trip. I was nervous, but not the good kind of nervous. Sure, Caim was a good friend, but he was a Hufflepuff, among other things. But how would he react if I told him about my impeding doom if we got serious? I sighed, swinging myself out of bed. Don't think too far ahead, I told myself.
Abby and Lizzy weren't helping matters. As with every time I got a date (well, this was only the 2nd time), they flew into a frenzy.
After the date in Hogsmeade I met Tom and Lucas at Honey Dukes.
"How'd it go?" asked Tom.
"Okay," I said, which was partly true. Caim had taken me on a tour of Hogsmeade, showing me the less known shops, and describing their history and taking me in. He knew a lot of the shopkeepers. He was quite a geek, which was cute and fun. I had enjoyed myself more than I had meant to.
"I think you're lying," said Lucas.
"How can you tell?" I asked, a little taken aback.
"You seem different. Airier, almost." Lucas said. He hadn't smiled, but he seemed a little happier. Just a little.
"Lucas, you seem different. Why are you so sober?" I asked.
He shrugged. "Guess I'm just getting older," he said.
I glanced at Tom. Tom didn't look back.
"You guys wanna go fly on the Quidditch field? I got special permission," I said. Lucas moved to say something, but I said, "You don't have to, Lucas."
We walked a ways to the field, and I grabbed some rickety old school brooms. With a flick of my wand I restored them to a less damaged state and handed one to Tom. We mounted and flew off, circling the goals. "WE COULD PLAY 2-MAN QUIDDITCH!" I shouted, laughing.
"THAT MEANS YOU WOULD HAVE TO PLAY ALL THE ROLES AT ONCE!" Tom said back.
After a few minutes I flew down to Lucas in the stands, hovering over his seat. "Lucas, have you ever tried to ride a broom?" I asked, hitting the ground with my feet.
He shook his head.
"Hm," I said. "I'll try to make a two-man broom, okay? That way we could both ride, These old brooms wouldn't hold two people."
He smiled, and for the first time I felt entitled to smile back.
That evening, I walked down to the greenhouses, where the Herbology teacher had planted some beautiful cherry blossom trees with magical properties. The teacher had actually planted it in my 2nd year and sped up it's growth, but I had only noticed it and started visiting it since my 3rd.
The blossoms rained down like pink snow in the spring air.
I stood under them.
How could I die and leave such a beautiful world?
When I went back to my dorm, I wrote a letter to Mum. I asked her if she had found anyway to avoid my death. She wrote back by the time I went to bed. Of course she hadn't. She told me to enjoy my years, it was the best I could do. Find love and die happy. But that's selfish. Die happy only so the person who loves you dies sad?
I made up my mind.
Maybe it was time.
