If enough energy hits the earth (the sun swallows it), the oxygen will get destroyed into pure energy, or transformed into simpler elements, like hydrogen that has just one proton. With everyday types of things, like lighting a match to oxygen, it forms water by combining with hydrogen and releases energy.
