None of those things really affect dogs (except maybe grass while they need to do their business). I'd recommend toys and visits to make shelter dogs feel comfortable. Maybe give them some treats if the shelter allows. Toys and treats are pretty universal but don't visit dogs that the shelter will tell you bite or stuff like that. Obviously.
