Chapter 16: Reminiscence
Adonis woke up to a snoring idiot by the foot of his bed. It was Shawn, who seemed to know nothing about sleeping on his side for the respect of others. Adonis sat up, wiping the sleep out of his eyes. He yawned, trying to get a feel for the new environment he was in once again.
Yesterday was sort of a blur. He didn't get much rest between then and now. He had a nightmare about the phantom, as if the actuality wasn't enough. He never thought he'd have to deal with one since that fateful day...
Shaking the thought out of his mind, he slowly stepped on to the grass, making a slight crunch with the soles of his feet. He advanced upward, looking around to see who would rouse. No one did.
He walked a few blocks, stepping over any unconscious group members. The grass felt weird on his feet still, feeling like he was trampling on something important. It was important. At least, it was important to him. He looked up at the sky, hoping to see a certain someone looking back down at him. He liked to give himself false hope sometimes. He didn't think that any god if his would leave him hanging. Certainly not someone who loved him so..
He smiled because he knew that she was there. Even if.. He wasn't.
He wondered around the forest in wishes of finding something worth being awake for. Stick? He thought. No, what would I need a stick for... He wondered if people in Diamon did anything with the bark of the trees. He noticed that they all looked different; some with simple brown skin, some with spotted white skin, and some with dark plated skin. Some didn't even look as if it had skin at all. He loved how diverse the forest was, as all he grew up seeing was dead saplings and coarse dirt. He was lucky to see sunlight as wonderful as this on most days.
Maybe even any sunlight at all.
He heard someone from behind him speak in a very calm manner.
"Still gawking, are we?"
He turned around, surprised to see Shawn standing right there. Adonis looked him up and down with a scrunched up face. "What do you want?" He asked belligerently. "No need for that," Shawn responded. Adonis clenched his fist.
"Shouldn't you be crying yourself to sleep still?" Adonis sneered. "I think you're the one who was crying himself to sleep last night. I remember you uttering the words, 'Mother, no!'" He laughed to himself at the last word. Adonis' proud look quickly turned into a shocked gawk. "...You're lying, I'd have no reason to say that."
"Oh, but you did!" He continued, his sadistic grin growing. "In fact, once I stopped 'crying myself to sleep', as you put it, I heard you further elaborate on it by screaming, 'Dad, help!'. Not sure who you were talking to though, we both know daddy wasn't coming home go save you.. Or your mother. They're both gone, why still hold on to them like you have any chance?"
Adonis could feel his body start to shake, the trees trembling along with him. Shawn stumbled upon the floor that was also beginning to quake violently. "You..." Adonis quietly boomed in a deep, dark baritone voice, "You... Know... NOTHING!"
He held his head and banged it with his hands as if trying to gain back control of himself, and for a moment, he saw Shawn's face flood with fear.
But without hesitation his eyes started to glow this soulless white, power started to overcome him like a thunderstorm that he had conjured out of his body. He felt himself be struck with lightning, and he felt an energy he had never before. He felt his anger turn into his greatest weapon, anger he didn't even feel at the previous moment.
Where was this coming from?
As soon as it started, it ceased. His eyes went back to their normal, friendly blue, and the surge of power he felt escaped from him like an involuntary fart. It was like everything had been taken away from him... Once again.
It was hard catching his breath, as his lungs now felt more pronounced and heavier than before. He tilted his head upward, his eyes meeting the traumatic stare in Shawn's.
Still trying to find his stability, Adonis managed to utter, "Still gawking, are we?"
