chapter seven
the costume party
The next day, Freya watched Halloweentown I, Halloweentown II, and Hocus Pocus with Madison and Frances. Freya thought they were strange movies, but the humans enjoyed them. So that's what kind of holiday is on October thirty-first, thought Freya. Halloween. Samhain. All Hallow's Eve.
After they watched the movies, Madison washed Freya up, and bundled her in blankets, and put her on top of her cage. Madison started to have a conversation with her.
''And then, and then there--'' she coughed loudly. ''It's OK, Freya. I was just coughing.''
That night, the humans had a costume party. Frances was dressed as a bear; Madison was dressed as ''cereal killer''; and Brandon was wearing his everyday clothes [black t-shirt, black jeans, and black work boots]. Freya had to listen to ''This Is Halloween'', ''The Monster Mash''. and ''Werewolves Of London''. There was a blue moon that night.
''Jane,'' Freya called over the music.
''What is it, Freya,'' her friend sprinted over to her.
Freya cleared her throat. ''Um, what kind of strange party is this''
''A costume party.'' Jane answered.
''A what'' Freya said, more confused than ever.
''Cost-ume par-ty.'' said Jane slowly and clearly.
''And what's a costume party,'' cried Freya.
''A party you have on Halloween.'' replied Jane. Freya's heart pounded with fear. Oh, no. she thought. No, no, no. Freya had to listen to ''Time Warp'' in the middle of the night. Then another cat joined them. She was an older cat, about a year old, fourteen years old in human years. Freya was six in human years, and Jane and her siblings were twelve. This cat's name was Nippet.
''Hi, Freya.'' Nippet said. She looked a little like Hissy Growl-Growl, except for the eyes. She and Nippet were both tortoiseshells. Hissy Growl-Growl had small blue eyes like Freya, while Nippet's eyes were huge, round, and gold. She was really pretty.
And so the party went on.
