“Get comfy, its a long 4 hours to Dallas.” Gerald said as they were in the truck.
“I will.” Daniel said as he went to sleep.
He had a flashback, while asleep.
1975 Southeast Texas High school football state championship.
It was 31-35, 8 seconds remaining, 2nd and 5 on the opponent’s 37 yardline.
He was on the left of John Davidson. John Davidson was right next to the sideline.
The qb hiked it, and found Davidson open.
Davidson ran a slant, and caught the ball. He broke off a tackle, and juked a defender.
He was 15 yards away from victory. No time left.
He sees star linebacker of their opponent, Ray Wepner.
He tries maneuvering around Ray, to no avail.
He was at the 3 yard line, and tried to leap for the end zone.
Wepner made extremely hard contact with his helmet to John’s ribs.
John fell, short of the endzone, and flipped midair.
He fell at such a position where he broke his neck.
He died on the field that day, something that would dump more salt on the wound.
At the Davidson family’s request, he was buried at the graveyard right next to the field.
After he lay motionless at the 1 yard line, everyone fell silent.
Wepner was on one knee, staring at the motionless body, then taking off his helmet.
“GET A DOCTOR HERE, D*MMIT!” Wepner yelled.
The coach, qb, Daniel, and the runningback, went to John’s body along with the doctor.
The doctor felt his pulse.
“He’s dead. Im sorry, coach. We’ll let the family know.” The doctor said.
The other players gathered.
The coach told everyone to join hands.
They all prayed.
They all watched as John’s body was carried away.
The crowd still lay silent, in complete shock and sadness of what just happened.
Daniel woke up.
“You alright? You look weird.” Gerald said.
“Have i told you about my senior year in high school?” Daniel asked.
