Being alive was always a hard task. It was for anyone. But Adrien found it especially difficult when all the people around him he didn’t like. He didn’t hate them to be clear, he just thought they thought a lot of stupid things. He tried not to get to angry about it because he couldn’t do anything about what people thought. He wasn’t that good looking. Not that he tried. Quite the contrary actually. He always sat in the back, just looking and listening. Quietly judging. That was the paradigm in his school. The professor couldn’t, and wouldn’t, keep track of five hundred plus students. So he just sat in the back and drifted in and out of consciousness. He always passed every class he took anyway. If he could he would just take every final exam and be out of this place in a week. But no. Everyone had to go at the same pace, do the same things, think the same thing. It was so infuriating. At least class was going to get out soon.

Walking through these halls was no more comfortable than congealing in the entrapment of the classroom. A thousand people wandering about wasting sums of money some have only dreamt of. They didn’t know what they were doing, they were only here because they had been told to be here. If you asked most of them what they wanted to do after they got the little piece of paper they loved so much they would say “Something like blank I guess, probably.” Of course, he knew what he wanted to do, programing for whoever would pay him the most. He was quite good at it, barely needed school really. Except that every employer expected it. Ah the things we do prove that we weren’t one of the ignorant.

Another thing that this place forced down your throat, these damn holidays. Valentines day. What was the point? What’s so special about the fourteenth day of the second month of the year? Whatever the origins of the holiday they have been lost over the many celebrations. It just wasn’t worth preserving. If you asked, nobody would say it was their favorite holiday. What they would say is Christmas. Now obviously the original intentions of that holiday had been lost as well. But in that case, it was a good thing. Despite that fact, the whole school was covered stem to stern with bargain basement pink and purple. It was just down right offensive. There was nowhere to look that they didn’t cover. Good thing he was leaving already.

Well this was bloody typical wasn’t it? How exactly was it too hot outside in February? It was about eighty degrees outside with a hot wind. Of course nothing was happing to the world though. There was no way humans could be changing the environment they live in. It was all completely natural. Honestly if the world never went above about seventy-four, he would be fine with that. Cold was so much better than hot. Hot weather just sucked the life out of everything. By biology, hot slowed you down, and cold sped you up. To him it was crazy that people lived anywhere near the desert. It did have one advantage, low humidity. Water and air should not mix. Humans didn’t have gills.

“Finally, something actually good.” He had escaped the school at last for the day. He had been saving some money to go to his favorite restaurant. A local Vietnamese restaurant he loved. Asian cooking was some of the best in the world. That, and good old-fashioned American cooking. A good hamburger and salad would always be a satisfying meal. If those were the only kinds of food in the world, he’d be pretty ok with that.

After his meal he headed straight home. It’s not like he had anything else to do. After a couple hours of milling around he went to bed, and as most of us do dreamt up whatever the mind had to offer. But on this certain night he felt something a little different. Not so much the images themselves, but the emotions along with them. It felt very happy, affirming somehow. Things he’d never felt in a dream. With potency he’d never felt in real life. It was exhilarating. And when he woke up he could barely remember any of it. All he could recall was some vague dulled sense of the emotion he had apparently once felt. If only he could remember just what had filled him with such passion. What a loss.
