Chapter 5

Svanhildr : Me, Randhi, a scammer, my sister and the Heritage center owner’s daughter

During Math class, I had a test.

I was really anxious, I couldn’t stop thinking about Randhi’s Email. Was Randhi trying to make me worried?

Nonetheless, I did the test.

I finished quickly… in 30 minutes.

After a while, My Math teacher had to call me up front. Usually when this happens, it means that I got a bad grade.

Feeling Hopeless, I went up to my Math teacher to talk.

“Guess what?” he told me.

I sat upfront. “What?” I replied.

He gave me the test paper, which had a big red mark that said “100.”
I was shocked. Apparently I was the only person who got 100. In the whole class.

Feeling pretty happy, I spent the whole day smiling, so much that I was forgetting about what Randhi told me.

When I saw Randhi during lunch, we decided to talk about what Janelle was doing.

However, I noticed that Randhi was talking to a different girl. She had long brown hair and had a lot of freckles, she also had glasses.

“Heil og sæl.” she said, greeting me.

I sat down next to her. “What is your name?” I asked her.

She showed a scrapbook page. “Hello, I am Jytte A.Holm . I am a 7th grader and I am of Danish descent. I am the daughter of the CEO of Nordic Hearts.” she said.

I dropped my lunchbox. “No...way.” I said, looking at her.

Jytte laughed but changed her tone. “Anyways, what kind of Scandinavian are you? Are you Norwegian, Swedish, Danish or Finnish?” she asked.

I stood there for a long time. I don’t want to be referred as a Scandinavian, I want to be referred as a Nordic person. Also, what if I’m Faroese.

After a while, I finally spoke. “I was born and raised in the Faroe Islands, I moved here 7 years ago.” I said.

Jytte clapped happily. It was pretty shocking because she probably never met a Faroese person. “You are so cool, it is a bummer that we have to control you guys.”
I smiled. “Thank you.”

After a while, lunchtime was over for the 7th graders. Jytte and Randhi left.

I waved at them. “Maybe along with Randhi and  Nilufar, Jytte could be friends with us.” I thought.

Feeling motivated again, I walked home to school feeling happy.

Until I read the sign outside the post office. It was a sign for the Nordic festival.

Sighing, I took a quick look at it.

You are invited to the 35th annual Nordic festival

Acossiation and Bunads by Sylva.

Worried about the festival news, I grabbed a flyer and went home to see if I can tell Æsa without her crying.

Æsa looked totally fine. She was dancing to a CD of a this singer named Kirsten Bråten Berg, who was a Norwegian-American folk singer who was well known back in the 90s, but was forgotten later on.

She was also wearing a Bunad. Æsa probably got that Bunad off Sylvia’s, which sells Scandinavian traditional dresses for very cheap. The last time I remembered, Æsa only had 35$ saved from her 9th birthday money. Maybe she stole some from Mom or Dad?

I did not want to make Æsa sad, she looked like she was having fun, but at the same time where did she get that CD?

I approached Æsa, lowering the volume of her music.   She stopped doing her Norwegian folk dance

I kneeled. “Æsa, where did you get the CD and the Bunad?” I asked her.

Æsa shook her head for a while. Apparently having slow memory in my family is something genetic.

Æsa laughed. “Well, a girl named Annbjørg wanted to trade the puffin plushie you had for the CD, and I bought the Bunad off an older boy at my school.” she said.

I felt angry. Not only she sold my puffin plush I got before leaving the Faroe Islands, but she bought a counterfeit Bunad. I felt so angry.

Æsa had her fair share of moments of mischief, like the time she pranked me on my 14th birthday by putting soap on my cupcakes. But her spending my money is a whole level.

I asked Æsa who the boy was, and it was a boy named Skjold Ramussen, who was in highschool.

I went on a bicycle to his house to talk about his illegal activity.

I went really fast to Skjold’s house, I needed my money back.

When I got there, Skjold was with his Co-op sister, Ellinor Berg, who is also a Norwegian-American.

I knocked on the door. “Skjold, I know you are illegally selling bunads for cheap. Where did you buy them?” I asked him.

He was holding a sign from Sylvia’s. “I bought them off Sylvia’s and made them cheaper.”
I was actually less worried than we expected about Æsa . We returned Æsa’s Bunad, and gave Æsa her 7$ she spent.

The question is, who was the girl who has my Faroese puffin plush.

You might bully me because 17-year olds don’t sleep with stuffed animals, but I do.

Before we left the Faroe Islands, My friend Sunna Á-rógvu got me puffer, who was a puffin plush. He was the size of your average plush, and he was holding a faroese flag.

I loved puffer. I always brought him to school… well until one day in the 7th grade when I got him during a math test and distracted some kids.

Still, I felt heavy over Puffer. He was a prized possession of mine.

Æsa: *casually sells something sentimental like an idiot and does not feel a single bit of remorse*

Svanhildr: ItS fInE bUT i WoNDeR wHo HAs iT???

Come on, the younger sibling isn’t always innocent.

I think Svanhildr should’ve at least yelled at Æsa. If something THAT sentimental is sold by your younger sibling, you’re going to punch them. Svanhildr is more calm, but she would’ve yelled at Æsa.

Other than that part which made me slightly mad, great chapter!
