Chapter 10.

Brrrrrriiiing.

Brrrrrriiiing.

Brrrrrriiiing.

Brittany yawned. Her Koppad was buzzing; someone was calling her. *Alph, hopefully,* she thought as she picked it up.

Sure enough, the young engineer was there, looking alarmed. "Thank goodness you're alive!" he cried. "You were lying so still, and you weren't picking up, and I thought-"

"Relax, Alph, I'm fine," she said. "And it's good to see you're doing well. Where are you?"

"I'm just outside... whatever it is you're stuck in. T-there's a bunch of cracks in the wall, and I looked through one of them. How are you doing?" He still looked pretty shaken.

"I'm okay. Pretty hungry, and kind of sore, but otherwise alright. But get this - there's a fruit close by, and it's HUGE. I got a peek at it while trying to get out of here. Do you think you can get it?"

"Yeah!" Alph nodded.

"That's the spirit!" she said. "You got this!"

He hung up. She sat down and began analyzing some of the large petals that were scattered on the ground. The flora on PNF-404 was quite fascinating; it grew to astonishing heights and in bright, vivid hues. There weren't many plants back on Koppai, and most of them were the same boring green shade.

Brittany took a moment to lay back and think. After all, she had all the time in the world...

*****************

"Brittany! Stop staring at those flowers and get a move on!"

Nelle's foot tapped the floor impatiently. They'd been trying to find the pet store for 10 minutes - she needed food for the animals back at the vet clinic - and had passed by a florist's shop on the way. Brittany had been admiring the lilac and navy blossoms for a while now, fawning over each intricate flower.

She started, adjusted her glasses, and turned to her cousin. "Right. Right. Sorry."

"You're so feather-headed," her cousin scoffed disdainfully. "When will you learn to get a grip on reality?"

"And when will you learn to stop being such a snob?"

"At least I don't fall head-over-heels for some pretty plants."

"Says the one who... erhm..." She didn't want to admit it, but Nelle was right. She DID get distracted by nature pretty quickly. And she wasn't the most patient Koppaite ever, either.

And maybe that was why-

******************

Mom and Dad were fighting. Again.

Brittany had holed up in her room, hugging her legs to her body as a storm of words formed just outside. This time, it had been over who was worse at food preparation - likely one of the dumbest reasons of that week.

She shoved pillows over her ears in a fruitless attempt to block out the yells. Both her parents were volatile people; it was never a normal day without a heated debate. The worst part was the small size of their home, where the furious shouting could be heard throughout the whole building.

Annoyed, she opened her door and walked towards the kitchen, blending the fruit juice herself. She'd done a lot more for the family than both the adults; at times, she considered them somewhat incompetent.

Brittany picked up the blended juice and carried it back to her room, taking a sip as she stared out the window, at the grassy meadow beyond.

Somewhere in the living room, a plate shattered, followed by a stream of insults.

At that point, she'd had it. She opened up the window, grabbed her juice, and-

****************************

The deafening sound of breaking glass snapped her out of her thoughts.

Alph had broken down the lone crystal wall in her porcelain prison. The afternoon sun shone from behind, outlining his features with gold.

And next to him stood an army of little creatures.

Brittany stood up, unnerved by the blank, beady-eyed stares, and approached her teammate. "Thanks," she said curtly. "If I may ask... what's with the entourage?"

"Oh, these little guys?" He beamed. "These are the Pikmin! They've been helping me out!"

She had to admit, they were rather endearing. Some of them were bright red, with pointy noses a bit like hers; others had chunky gray bodies and tiny arms. One of them was a pale scarlet shade.

Alph flinched. "Oooh... Your arm..."

She looked at her arm. Blood seeped from a small cut. It must have been from the glass; she hadn't noticed the stinging pain in her excitement.

"We should go to the Drake," she suggested. "I can get proper medical supplies, and you can explain everything you think I should know."

"Sounds good."

And so the pair returned to their ship, reunited at last.

Betcha weren't expecting Brittany lore >B) I'm trying to make her less hateable in TFtK.

Important:

- The teeth of Koppaites aren't as strong as human teeth; they are unable to consume solid food. Instead, they put fruit through a juicer, which squeezes out the juice - what they really need - and eliminates the rest - what they don't, minus the seeds.

- Brittany spent her more mature years of childhood with her aunt. She's also myopic, which is why she wears glasses.

The new gray Pikmin are Rock Pikmin. I decided to skip their introduction to focus more on characters other than Alph. (I'm sorry I just feel like he's being used way too much)
