Chapter 28
This new area, dubbed the Twilight River by the ship, was somehow just as unique as the last three places. Unlike the leafy greens in the Forest of Hope, and the Distant Tundra’s gray-white-blue theme, there was nothing but brown and rose as far as the eye could see.
Two Yellows and a Rock Pikmin ran forward, jumping onto a crisp fallen leaf, as Brittany led her small squad through a path strewn with more leaves. Alph and Charlie were currently exploring elsewhere, giving her a nice, peaceful day for once.
It was kind of boring.
She wasn’t personally too invested in Charlie’s conversations - she’d rather not even be in any of them - but lately, the romantic tension between the captain and the engineer had been giving her some drama to witness. Seeing quiet Charlie constantly babbling on about random things, while the typically-loudmouthed Alph listened silently to his stories, was honestly rather amusing.
She sat down by a wide, sparkling river and booted up her Koppad, looking for fruit signals nearby. Delectable Bouquet over there, Citrus Lump somewhere across the river, what looked like a purple blob with a hat… Definitely a good place to build up their juice supplies. And then there was the new signal - which they all hoped was coming from their cosmic-drive key - which sent little blue ripples across the screen. *Hopefully we can get that thing back soon. Then we can finally go back home.*
A twig snapped loudly. Her ear twitched. “Alright, who’s there?”
The captain stepped out of a bush. “Hey, Brit,” he mumbled, “I was wondering if you had time to chat?”
*Please, no…* She looked around for some sort of distraction, but gave up. “Sure, I guess…”
“So, uh… I think I have a crush on someone else now…” Charlie kicked some dust. “I mean, don’t get me wrong, you’re a really cool person, but I just… don’t think it was meant to be, per se.”
*Oh, thank the stars,* she thought. *No more of this guy’s simping.*
An awkward silence descended.
“Soooo,” Brittany said, after a few seconds, “who’s the new crush?”
“Promise you won’t laugh, or call me weird, but… It’s Alph.”
*Predictable.* “Okay. What’s so wrong about that?”
“Well, he’s a guy, but I’m also a guy, and I’m not even sure if I’m allowed to love him, but I do!” he explained. “What if I’m broken, or something?”
“So you do. Get used to it.” She shrugged, not really knowing what to tell him.
“Well… All right.” Charlie hopped off the rock he’d been sitting on and disappeared.
“Ugh. Finally, he’s gone,” she grumbled to the Pikmin. They ignored her and continued playing in the grass. Finally, peace again…
… that was interrupted by her KopPad ringing.
Groaning, she picked up the call, but was surprised to see… someone unfamiliar. And they had pointed ears - they weren’t even a Koppaite. *I knew we weren’t the first people here, but I didn’t expect to actually MEET anyone…*
The panicked individual was trying to say something, but was being interrupted by a bunch of static. “Ship crash… Captain Olimar… giant creature here… please, if you can…” Something like buzzing began to arise as the call continued. They looked to the side, and their eyes widened. “It’s back!” he cried, before the video cut short.
Well, that was gonna be a problem.
