Chapter 29
“So, yeah, I was just minding my own business, and I got a call from some rando,” Brittany explained. “He mentioned the name ‘Captain Olimar’. I’ve definitely seen that in some of those random data files we’ve been finding everywhere,” she added, pulling up one of them and pointing to the author. “This is probably the guy who’s been leaving them around for us. What should we do about him?”
“Go out there and find him!” Charlie exclaimed, shocked. “Why is this even a question?”
“Because our food supplies are running low, and if we take him in, we’ll have to ration our supplies even further. And besides, I’ve got a pretty bad feeling about this guy. At this point, the search for the cosmic-drive key has become some sort of wild goose chase, and I don’t like where it’s headed.” She took a sip from her afternoon juice cup.
“He’s a living creature! How would you feel if one of us had left you behind in a bad situation? We can’t just leave him there to fight that creature alone!”
“Ugh, fine, we’ll go rescue the Hocotatian, if it’ll make you happy. Alph, how’s he doing?”
“Surprisingly, he’s alive, and doesn’t seem to be hurt. I feel kind of bad, though, leaving him out there to face the elements.”
“Which is why we should go after him IMMEDIATELY!” the captain declared, standing up on the table and dramatically pointing at nothing in particular.
Silence followed. “Y-you can get down now, captain,” Alph mumbled.
“Ah, right. Well, I think we get the point, don’t we?” He sat down. “Tomorrow, we set off to find and rescue Captain Olimar!”

The Koppaite trio trekked through the Tropical Wilds, a swarm of chirping Pikmin close behind them. Flame and their Red brethren walked near the front, their pointed noses confidently raised in the air, while Apollo and Brock staked at the back alongside their Rock Pikmin kin.
“Hey, Alph, how much farther?” the captain barked over his shoulder.
“Uh, it should be just over part of the river,” he said. “After that, we take a few turns, and - hey, what’s that?”
Brittany and Charlie paused and followed the engineer’s gaze towards some sort of squirming pink thing. Given the round shape and the familiar white patterns… perhaps it was another Onion? It looked like it was caught in something.
They hopped on a lilypad to cross and approached the trapped Onion. Now that they were close, Alph could see another black-and-yellow orb, but decided not to worry about it.
“So. Who goes up there?” Brittany asked.
“Hm. Maybe the captain?” Alph turned towards Charlie.
“Wait, why me?” he said, taking a step back.
“Well, you’re a lot stronger than Brittany and I, and braver, and calmer, and-”
“We get it, Alph. He’s going. You can be quiet now,” she snapped, grabbing Charlie’s suit and hurling him towards the white web the pink Onion was caught in.
He hit the web, making it wobble, and reached towards the Onion…
Before stopping suddenly.
“I’m stuck.”
And just next to him, the large black orb began unfurling its legs. *Oh, crud, that’s a spider.*
Alph called up to him. “Okay, uh, don’t panic, but there’s a spider in that web, and I think it’s coming towards you.”
“Wait, WHAT?” the captain yelped, now panicking.
