Chapter 32
The giant bug hovered across from them, its workers buzzing around it protectively as it stared them down. Malice glinted in its bulging eyes. Behind the three leaders, a few Wing Pikmin chirped, some in fear, others in determination.
Alph took a step back. This one was puny compared to some of the other enemies they’d seen, but it certainly didn’t look like it would give them an easy fight. If they weren’t careful, the queen would decimate their Pikmin with its workers. They were going to need to carefully utilize the skills of their Pikmin if they wanted to-
“Get outta the way!” the Captain yelped, pulling him to the side just as a swarm of bees flew by. Most of their troops were able to escape, save for a few stragglers; they squealed as the shiny bugs carried them off.
Brittany rushed forward and charged their remaining Pikmin at the harp bug… or tried to. They seemed to completely ignore her whistle, or rather, her in general.
She stomped her foot angrily. “ I SWEAR TO THE STARS, if you don’t start LISTENING to me, I’m going to DRAG YOU DOWN and TEAR OFF YOUR DUMB WINGS!” In response, they floated up higher, still mocking her, but now a little warier. “Cowards,” she grumbled.
“Okay, Brittany, if you want to lead them, you’ve gotta be nice,” Charlie said, whistling the flying Pikmin over to his side. As soon as he charged them, they were all over the queen, whacking it with their stems. It screamed, fell to the ground, and dragged itself towards the center, opening its mouth and clawing at the white strings.
At last, it plucked a single note, and in an instant the entire army was back, swooping down and trying to catch the Pikmin, who squealed and scattered. It got back up and began flying again.
Charlie pointed at Alph. “Alph! Gather a few and try to find the Pikmin that were captured by their attacks earlier. I’ll handle this fight!”
“Uhm…” Alph glanced at the queen. “The Pikmin are… right there.”
Sure enough, a few workers now circled around their queen, each with a squirming Wing Pikmin in its jaws. “You know what, we’ll just get them back while we fight the big one. Try to go around it and attack its forces from there.”
He nodded, whistled some Pikmin to him, and ran over to the giant bug, throwing Pikmin at its forces while Charlie ran around in front of it, keeping its attention. Brittany watched from the background, silent.
At last, the final Pikmin was freed. Alph gave it a pat on the head and quickly charged it at the queen, which was busy trying to take down Charlie and his squad. It shook desperately, trying to rid itself of the Pikmin while staying in the air. Suddenly, it violently thrashed backwards…
… towards the edge of the stump’s top.
By now, the Pikmin’s attacks had overwhelmed the creature. It stumbled and fell over the side of the arena, gripping desperately to the edge.
Suddenly, Bee abandoned attacking the creature, flying down and standing in front of it. Then it stomped on the insect’s hands, making it screech and fall. The Twilight River was silent, save for the light thump they heard as the queen hit the ground far below and the chirping of the returning Wing Pikmin who had been attacking it so viciously.
The Koppaites looked on at the scene. “Wow,” Alph breathed. “Nature is brutal.”
More dead insect bodies promptly rained from the sky, followed by a large fruit, and the Hocotatian they’d been looking for.
Charlie silently threw a few Pikmin at the fruit and the Hocotatian. None of them knew what to say about what had happened. They just wanted to get the stuff they needed and leave.
