Chapter 26

A dozen Pikmin cried out happily as they lifted an enormous fruit above them and began carrying it back to the Drake. Another four dragged along the corpse of a Dwarf Bulborb, adding numbers to their troops. So far, they hadn’t run into anything really dangerous back in the Garden of Hope. Revisiting it to collect food had definitely been one of Charlie’s better ideas.

The captain whistled at a few idle Yellows, threw them at a wall, and joined Brittany, who was overseeing the retrieval of a cluster of Dusk Pustules. “So, how are things going over here?” he asked, rubbing one arm nervously.

“Just. Fine,” she replied, sighing. “Don’t you have something better to do, or something?”

“Well, all the Pikmin are out doing things right now, because of their awesome captain-”

“Go check on Alph. Trust me, he’ll want company.”

They’d left Alph alone on the ship to heal up his leg and install the device, named the Folded Data Glutton by the naming AI, into its system. She did have a point - they hadn’t thought to leave any Pikmin with him, so he was probably lonely.

*So I’ll go check on Alph, and then he won’t be sad, and then Brittany will see how nice I am, and she’ll be impressed, and then-*

Brittany pushed him towards the blue bridge they’d built to make a shortcut. “Go on. See what he’s doing. Maybe leave him a few Pikmin, or something.”

“Oh… Alright,” he mumbled, trudging across.

—----------------------------------

The Drake was almost silent - almost, except for the whirring and creaking coming from under the control panel. One of the metal ‘walls’ had been unscrewed and lay to the side, tiny screws scattered in front of it. Inside the panel, multicolored wires hung like streamers. The darkness was pierced by a flurry of faint sparks, which suddenly stopped, alongside a faint buzzing sound.

A blue glove reached out from the shadows and brushed aside a cluster of wires. Alph peeked out, looked around, and scooted across the floor on some sort of flat plastic thing with wheels, stopping at the Folded Data Glutton, which had been carefully disassembled, parts strewn around it. He picked up some scraps and used his not-bandaged leg to kick back towards the opening. He hadn’t noticed Charlie… yet.

“Hey,” the captain began, leaning against the wall.

Alph jumped, dropping the parts, and whipped around to face him. “C-Captain!” he stammered, reaching down to pick them back up. “I-I thought you were, well - shouldn’t you be - why aren’t you with Brittany right now?”

“I wish I could be,” he said, sighing, “but she thought you might like some company. So, yeah, here I am.”

Silence and awkward eye contact followed.

“You’re doing that thing again, where you go all… red.” Charlie lifted a hand and made a vaguely-Alph-head-shaped circle in the air. “Seriously, we should consult that one guidebook on space sickness. Something is definitely up with you.”

Alph buried his face in his hands, avoiding his gaze. “Nonono, nothing’s wrong. It’s just… I don’t know how to explain… Charlie, I-”

“Aha!” he cried, staring at one section of the guidebook. “Excess sweating, flushing, probably dizziness… hang on. What’s your pulse?” Not looking away from the article, he pressed one hand against Alph’s chest, feeling for his heartbeat. “Yeah, that’s pretty quick. According to the book, you’ve got hyperthermia. How about we go outside a bit to help you cool off? I think there’s some ice bags in the basement. Do you think you’ve healed up enough to walk, or should I carry you again?”

“I’m fine! N-no carrying! Please!” he yelped.

“Alright. Follow me to the waterside. Hopefully the water will help you cool off.”

—--------------------------

Just as he’d predicted, the pond was nice and cool, perfect for Alph’s condition. Charlie splashed around in the water while Ducky floated near the sand, gently bobbing up and down.

“Hey, get in here!” he said to Alph, who sat in the grassy area, watching Spectralids flutter around. “This is what we came here for, remember?”

“I-I’m sorry, I…” He sighed and hung his head. “I don’t know how to swim. I just know how to flail.”

“Well, that’s fine. You can still get in; you’ll just be walking around on the floor. The suit should be able to produce air on its own for around 7 hours.” As a demonstration, he stopped paddling and sank down, shrugging when he hit the sand.

“Oh. Okay.” The smaller Koppaite tentatively stepped into the water, looking around. His eyes went wide as he scanned the scenery.

“Pretty cool, huh?” Charlie asked. “Usually swimming helps me relax. Whenever I’m stressed, I can just get Ducky, go to the pond near my house, and-”

“Who’s Ducky?”

He pointed to the little rubber duck near the shore. “That’s Ducky. I bring him on all my missions. He’s sort of a good-luck charm to me.”

“Wow. That’s pretty cool!”

“R-really?” he said, surprised. “Thank you!” Most people scoffed at him whenever he talked about his rubber ducky, or pretended to listen. “Well, it’s about time you get back to work. Make sure the fans are on, though, alright? I don’t want you passing out from overheating.”

Alph nodded and trotted back to the Drake.

Charlie sat down and realized how warm he felt. *Oh, no. Was the water actually hot?* But it had been cold earlier… So how was he experiencing Alph’s symptoms as well?

Staring at the sand, he came to a sudden realization. *Is this… love?*
